Started in 1998 by Betty Crass, Grays Harbor Shop with a Cop is a 501c3 non – profit organization formed by a group of volunteers from local law enforcement agencies. Grays Harbor Shop with a Cop raises money throughout the year in order to provide needy area youth with a good Holiday season.
As many as 80 deserving children are selected from over 20 grade schools throughout the County. They attend a breakfast hosted by Santa at Aberdeen High School and are then matched up with an Officer to ride in a patrol car, sounding the sirens and flashing the patrol car lights in a vehicle parade to Wal-Mart to shop for Christmas gifts for themselves or other family members.
The main purpose of having the children shop with an Officer is to show that Law enforcement Officers are really "The Good Guy's." Shopping with a caring Officer really makes an impression on the children and by the end of the shopping experience, they realize they really are a caring person.
Funds for this SWAC program are through donations from many businesses, Corporate institutions, Civic organizations, Law enforcement agencies and private citizens.
